Chiapelli, Jo

Jo Chiapelli was born in Detroit, lived in Troy for 31 years and now resides in Clawson, Michigan. She studied drawing, design and painting at Oakland Community College; Birmingham-Bloomfield Art Association; and with Lorraine Chambers McCarty; and Dolores Demers Kurily. She has also taken workshops with national artists Ray Loos, Tom Lynch, Peggy Brown, Randall Higdon and Bob Fagan.

Primarily a realistic artist, Jo paints landscapes, wildlife and flowers in watercolors and acrylics.” Her works are done only from her sketches and photographs.

She is a member of the South Oakland Art Association and the Royal Oak Art Council. Her works have been exhibited at the American Center Building in Southfield, the Birmingham-Bloomfield Art Association, Congregational Church of Birmingham and the Birmingham Community House. She has had 14 exhibits at the Troy Library.

Jo has given demonstrations and lectures for the Warren Art Society, Fraser Art Society, Anchor Bay Art Association, Pontiac-Oakland Society of Art, and South Oakland Art Association. She has taught painting and drawing at Southfield’s Senior Center, Birmingham Community House, Farmington Community Center, Rochester Community Center and for seventeen years in Troy’s Adult Education Program.

She has won numerous awards including the Grumbacher Bronze Medallion (1983), the Silver Medallion (1990), the Gold Medallion (1998), several South Oakland Art Association’s Artist of the Year Awards, Michigan State Fair Professional Awards (1983, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2005, 2006 and People’s Choice Awards Michigan State Fair (1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2009)
